Chapter 12

Claire

I had just gotten back to my house when my phone rang. Looking at the caller ID, I saw Glen's number. We still hadn't finished the conversation that we were having on the plane and I wasn't ready to discuss the subject any further.

"Hello," I answered, hoping that there was another reason for his phone call.

"Claire, I wasn't sure if you were going to answer, but I am glad that you did." He said, sounding cheerful.

"Is that so? What did you need, Glen?" I responded, doing my best to act like everything was fine.

"I need a lot of things. A vacation would be nice. I could also use a million dollars and a beautiful woman to spend it on, but that's beside the point."

I sighed heavily, too tired to pretend that I was happy, and replied "What is the point?"

I put my hand to my face, disappointed in myself for how I spoke. There it was again, that attitude that I despised in myself. Why couldn't I just be nice? Why did I always jump to defense at the start of a conversation? It was like the combative attitude that came out when I spoke to Gavin. I never planned for it to come out, but every time we spoke it was there.

"The point is that I was thinking about you and I wanted to see how you were doing." His words brought a smile to my face, putting a halt to rambling thoughts.

"Glen, that's sweet." I laughed "but I just saw you less than an hour ago. I've just now made it home. I'm great. You don't need to check on me."

"I just wanted to make sure you got home okay. I know you probably want to see your daughter so I will call you tomorrow. "

"Okay. I will talk to you then. Have a good night."

I hung up the phone without telling him about how I had already tried to see her. The thought of telling another person made me nervous. There was no easy way for me to explain the situation.

Filled with nervous energy I walked to the backyard to search for the hidden pack of cigarettes I knew were there. I quickly found them in the planting pot I had left them in after vowing never to smoke again and lit one. My muscles slowly started to relax as I inhaled the smoke of the stale cigarette and began to process the situation I was faced with.

In college, it was clear that Gavin would rather be with a man, but he was never able to try. His father made sure of that. The views of parents were very different from the way things are seen now. Not wanting to disappoint his father is what he spent his life doing.

Pacing in the yard, unable to stand still, my thoughts of Gavin with Kayla's guitar teacher, a young, handsome man, brought back a familiar feeling. The possibility that he may venture back to those thoughts had always been in my head.
